Asia Tribune

On 18th January 2003, Saturday, 10 Karen loggers were killed in jungles near

the town of Mong Nai, 280 miles northeast of Rangoon. The SPDC instantly

accused the Shan State Army which as the culprit for this killing. But later it was

learned from the civilians in nearby areas, that these killings were carried out

by the SPDC's a special commando unit or so-called Hit-teams.

In fact, they were from the same unit that killed 10 lent-observers on the

Full Moon of the 10th Lunar Month (21 September 2002). This hit-team also

had murdered Shan elders, at Kho Lam, southern Shan State on 22nd September

2002. The victims as old as 70 years old were killed by one of these hit teams

of terror in cold blood.

From the reliable sources, it was known that the junta have formed about

10 -15 men strong for a special commando unit or hit-team in each battalion

in the Shan State. Their duty is to carry out the killings and blame their fault

to discredit the opposition armed groups. They were ordered to wear uniforms

and insignias of the armed groups in the respecting areas.

Burmese Military authorities later instructed village elders and headmen to let

it be known that the culprits were the SURA insurgents. "Anyone found out to

have given a different story other than this will be punished and their property

taken away," one Burmese officer was quoted as telling them. The workers were

hired by Sai Hla Pe, a native of Kengtawng, who now lives in Namzang.
