"Nay Pyi Taw, 8 June — Representatives at the Amyotha Hluttaw raised questions on underground water and slaughtering of farm oxen, as well as discussing the emergency motion on boat people at the Monday session. Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Khin Zaw said research for the utilization of underground water for the whole country is a comprehensive task that should be carried out under the guidance of a national-level water resources management committee, and his ministry will cooperate with others concerned. Concerning the question on farm oxen, Member of Nay Pyi Taw Council U Phone Zaw Han said development affairs committees around the country permit slaughtering of oxen in accordance with rules and regulations, and action is taken against those who export or kill more oxen than permitted. Representatives later discussed the motion urging the union government to adopt a firm policy on boat people."
