Description:
"The United States strongly condemns the January 7 airstrike on Kanan Village in the Sagaing Region town of Khampat, Burma. Reporting indicates this latest attack killed at least 17 civilians, including nine children. This is yet another example of the horrors experienced by people in Burma since the military coup and the violence it has fueled across the country.
We reiterate our call on the Burma military regime to cease all forms of violence, free all those unjustly detained, allow unhindered humanitarian access, and respect the democratic aspirations of the people of Burma. The regime must abide by its obligations under international humanitarian law, including with regard to the protection of civilians.
We reaffirm our continued support of the Five Point Consensus, and stress that the United Nations Security Council must fully implement Resolution 2669 and also consider further actions to stem the regime’s violence. The United States underlines its commitment to using all tools at the Security Council’s disposal to support ASEAN’s efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis, a commitment affirmed by the vast majority of the Security Council.
The United States will continue to support peace, human rights, and an inclusive dialogue to promote genuine and inclusive democracy in Burma through our work with members of the Security Council, other UN Member States, and regional partners, including ASEAN.
The people of Burma, after nearly three years since the military wrested power away from the democratically elected government, are looking to us all for support. The international community must step up and speak out..."
