(1)   International Literacy Day observed


YANGON, 8 Sept - The 1999  International  Literacy
Day was observed at Myanmar  Educational  Research
Bureau on Pyay Road this  morning  with an address
by  Chairman   of  Myanmar   Education   Committee
Secretary-l  of the State  Peace  and  Development
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

 In his address, the Secretary-1 made a speech.

 Finally, I would  like to stress  once  again the
 fact that we must endeavour to transform  Myanmar
 into a peaceful, prosperous, modern and developed
 nation   based  on  our   beliefs,   culture  and
 tradition.  We must also welcome the 21st century
 which  will  be the  Age  of  Knowledge  on  this
 special   occasion  of  the  last   International
 Literacy Day of the 20th century.

 Then, Resident  Representative of UNDP Mr Patrice
 Coeur-Bizot made a speech.


 General  Secretary  of  Myanmar  UNESCO  National
 Commission   Rector  of   Yangon   Institute   of
 Education  U Han  Tin  read  the  message  of the
 director-general of UNESCO.

 Afterwards,  documentary  video on Education  for
 All  activities  being carried out in Myanmar was
 shown.

After the  ceremony,  the  Secretary-1  and guests
viewed the  Exhibition on  International  Literacy
Day.

(2)   Secretary-2  visits ancient jewellery and 
      artistic antiques exhibition


YANGON, 8 Sept-Secretary-2  of the State Peace and
 Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo visited ancient
 jewellery   and  artistic   antiques   exhibition
 sponsored  by   Archaeology   Department  at  the
 multipurpose  hall of the National Museum on Pyay
 Road this evening.  First, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin
 Oo and party  inspected book shops of Archaeology
 Department and  Department of Cultural  Institute
 at the entrance of multi-purpose hall.
 

Then,  Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party viewed
bone, stone and mollusc  beads of Bronze Age in BC
1000 and gold and jewellery of Pyu, Bagan,  Innwa,
Konbaung and Yadanabon eras and artistic  antiques
at the multi-purpose hall for one hour.

 Later,  Secretary-2  Lt-Gen  Tin Oo signed in the
 visitors' book.

 Biography  book of  Shin  Arahan,  documents  for
renovation  of Shin  Arahan  Okkyaung,  pagodas of
Bagan  Region,  renovation  of Bagan  Pagodas  and
other  books  of   Archaeology   Department   will
available  at  the  exhibition.

(3)   Thamok-Lutlut  River  Bridge on  Myeik-Dawei  
      Road commissioned into service



YANGON,  8 Sept  -Thamok-Lutlut  River  Bridge  on
Myeik-Dawei  Road in  Myeik  Township,  Taninthayi
Division, was commissioned into service  yesterday
morning>  with an  address  by member of the State
Peace  and   Development   Council   Chairman   of
Taninthayi Division Peace and Development  Council
Commander of Coastal Region Command  Maj-Gen Thura
Thiha Thura Sit Maung  Speaking  on the  occasion,
Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung made
a speech.

 The commander  presented  gifts to people who had
 taken   part  in   building   the   through   the
 representative.  Commander  Maj-Gen  Thura  Thiha
 Thura Sit Maung, Minister  Brig-Gen Lun Maung and
 Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint formally
 opened the  bridge.

(4)   Minister meets MD of TTF (Yangon)


YANGON, 8  Sept-Minister  for  Cooperatives U Aung
San met Managing  Director of TTF  (Yangon) Co Ltd
Mr Anant  Prasertsit  and party who  called at his
office this afternoon.

 Also present at the call were Director-General of
Co    operative    Department    U   Maung    Hti,
Director-General of Cottage Industries  Department
Col Sein Than, Managing  Director of  Cooperatives
Exports and  Imports  Enterprise  Daw Khin Swe Soe
and officials of the Minister's Office.

(5)   Minister meets MD of Myanmar Megasteel  
      Industries Ltd


YANGON, 8  Sept-Minister  at the  State  Peace and
Development    Council   Chairman's   Office   and
Secretary   of   Myanmar   Investment   Commission
Brig-Gen  Maung  Maung met  Managing  Director  of
Myanmar  Megasteel  Industries  Ltd  Mr  Yoshihiko
Yamashita  and party who called at MIC office this
afternoon.

 Also  present  at  the  call  were  officials  of
Directorate    of   Investment    and    Companies
Administration.

(6)   Magway Division USDA holds Annual General 
      Meeting


YANGON,  8 Sept-A  billboard  hailing  the  Annual
General   Meeting   of   Union    Solidarity   and
Development   Association  1999  was  unveiled  in
Magway on 5 September.

 USDA CEC member U Soe Tha delivered an address at
 the Annual  General  Meeting  of Magway  Division
 USDA  which was held at the  Division  USDA U Soe
 Tha  presented  certificates  to trainees who had
 completed the basic accountancy course.  The next
 day, U Soe Tha  attended  the  ceremony  to offer
 'soon'  to  1650  members  of  the  Sangha  of 72
 monasteries in Magway Township by USDA.

 Minister  for  National   Planning  and  Economic
 Development U Soe Tha also met with  personnel of
 Division  and  District  Planning  Offices at the
 Division Office.

 The  chairman  of  Magway   Division   Peace  and
Development   Council   also  took   part  in  the
discussions.

(7)   1.15938 kilos opium and 240 ml opium oil 
      seized in Hlegu



YANGON, 7 Sept-A combined team comprising  members
of regional intelligence and Myanmar Police Force,
acting on information, while waiting at the corner
of  Ngasutaung  road on  Phaunggyi-Hlegu  Road  in
Hlegu Township, Yangon  Division,  nabbed Lay Win,
son of U Aung Thaing of Nyaungdon  Village,  Hlegu
Township, together with 15 packets of opium.

 On further information, the authorities  searched
 his house and seized  four  packets  of opium and
 240  millilitres  of opium  oil.  Acting is being
 taken  against him under the  Narcotic  Drugs and
 Psychotropic  Substances Law.

(8)  Stimulant tablets and heroin seized in Mongshu


YANGON, 8 Sept-A combined team comprising  members
of regional  intelligence  unit, Tatmadaw  members
and   personnel   of   departments,    acting   on
information,  searched  the  house of Yan Aung (a)
Myint  Soe,  son of U Saw  Aung  Zaw of  Region-6,
Konmyinttha Ward, Mongshu Gems Land, Mongshu, Shan
State  (South),  and seized  six  plastic  packets
including  1,200  stimulant   tablets,  430  small
packets of heroin weighing  0.0215  kilogram and K
10,090.

 The  combined  team also  arrested  Ma Nang Phyu,
daughter of U Waya, of Region-6, Konmyinttha Ward,
Mongshu,  Kyaw Aung, son of U Aik Oo, Lupot  Ward,
Mongshu  Gems  Land,  Kyi Lin (a) Ye Lin, son of U
Pho  Hlaing,  Arshin,  son of U Yin, of  Region-6,
Konmyinttha  Ward, Law San, son of U Law  Sein, Ko
Latt,  son of U Mya  Hman,  Yin  Paung,  son  of U
Arlin,  Than  Aung, son of U Aik San, Aik  Thaung,
son of U Aik Yin and Aik Sai, son of U Aik  Hlyan,
who  happened  to  arrive  at  that  house  to use
narcotic drugs.


 Loi Saung Htauk Police  Station is taking  action
against  them  according  to  Narcotic  Drugs  and
Psychotropic  Substances Law.

(9)   56 members resign from Letpadan Township NLD


YANGON, 8 Sept-Fifty-six members resigned from the
National   League  for   Democracy   of   Letpadan
Township, Bago Division.


 Fifty-six members of Letpadan  Township NLD, Bago
Division,  of  their  own  volition,  resigned  by
sending   letters  of   resignation   to  Letpadan
Township  Multiparty  Democracy  General  Election
Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 7
May 1999 as they no longer  wished to  participate
in party politics of NLD.
